GDYNIA DESIGN DAYS 2023
The proposed design workshops at the Gdynia Design Days 2023 festival focused on the search for identity and the creation of spaces of belonging. Throughout an intensive program, participants engaged in various activities, art, and reflection to create unique experiences.
The main objective of the workshops was to create a space that reflects the diversity of cultures and identities, to feel at home. By embracing diversity and collectively being different, participants learned to draw from the richness of different perspectives and experiences.
The nesting element of the workshops involved creating artifacts and spatial objects that were intended for "creating" or calming the workshop space. These artifacts reflected diverse themes such as multicultural identity, modernist architecture, the port city, migration, and diversity. They aimed to create a sense of peace and safety, which was crucial to the nesting theme.
During the workshops, participants also delved into topics related to modernist architecture and proximity to the sea. By exploring the history of seafarers' families and comparing it to the experiences of contemporary refugees, participants gained a better understanding of both the concept of being on the road and the sense of belonging. We also touched upon the themes of migration, displacement, and the experience of living in a port city. These discussions allowed us to play with the concept of freedom, choice, and happiness.
Through the lens of Gdynia's unique history and culture, participants discovered ways to create a sense of belonging, security, and comfort wherever they are. It was an inspiring experience that provided them with a fresh perspective on the importance of diversity and the need to embrace differences.
The Nesting workshops were a valuable opportunity for participants to expand their knowledge, develop their creativity, and understand the role that art and design can play in creating inclusive and open spaces for diverse identities.
